The term "Clinical Psychologist" is protected in law. In order to practice as a Clinical Psychologist Alan has not only met the qualification requirements, he practices to the highest ethical and professional standards and is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council and British Psychological Society
Unfortunately, this is not the case for the terms "counsellor", "therapist" or "psychotherapist" and therefore there is much greater variation in skill and competence among individuals with those titles. Therefore, by choosing a Clinical Psychologist you can have confidence in the service you are receiving. Choosing a therapist is a very personal choice and can be a difficult decision. So, no matter who you see it is strongly recommend that you check qualifications, professional registration and if possible obtain reliable testimonials.
Q. What can I expect at the first appointment?
A. The first appointment is a chance for you to discuss in detail your current difficulties and concerns. You can expect to be listened to empathically and with care. Alan will ask a number of questions to get to the heart of the issues you are dealing with. He will invite you to think with him about how to move forward in the way that feels best for you and offer suggestions on ways to do so. Alan will explain how he will work with you and help you make an informed choice about what to do next. You can expect to leave with some simple but effective strategies to help manage your difficulties. In addition, at the first appointment Alan collect basic personal information so that he can contact you again. All information is kept securely and conforms strictly to Data Protection legislation.
Q. How much do you charge?
Fees vary depending on your circumstances and ability to pay. Alan offers a small number of reduced rate appointments.
Standard rates: individual £95 per hour
couples £110 per hour
Lower rates: individual £80 per hour
couples £90 per hour

Q. How do you work?
A. A key feature that distinguishes therapists of all kinds is the type of therapy they practice. There are many types of therapy out there but only a core group that are underpinned by scientific evidence. As a result of Alan's training and as a matter of professional and ethical values he only practices using evidence-based, NICE approved therapies (see the about page for details). That means you will only receive treatment that has been proven to be effective.
Often as important as level of training and choice of therapy is a good "fit" between client and professional based on trust and rapport. This can often only be judged after the first face-to-face meeting as it is a very personal experience. That clients feel safe and comfortable matters a great deal to Alan. As such, you can always expect to receive a warm, compassionate, honest, genuine and professional response from him at all times.
Q. How many sessions will I need?
A. Therapy is a very personal process and the number of sessions will vary depending on the individual and their level of need. However, extensive research suggests that most people experience considerable benefit from short-term therapy ranging between 4 and 25 sessions. Your therapy will be tailored to your specific needs and will be informed by the latest research on the number and type of treatments that best suit you. For example, NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommend that treatment for depression should typically be in the range of 16 to 20 sessions over 3 to 4 months.
Q. When are you available?
A. Monday evenings between 7:15pm and 9:15pm, Tuesdays all day from 9:00am to 9:15pm, and Fridays from 1pm to 5:30pm in the afternoon.
